A Building’s Health Through Its Foundation

Sep 20, 2021

The Foundation to your Future

When asked the question “Why do you need a house to live in?,” people often answer “Because it puts a roof over my head. “ Although a roof is really important to a house, it is like the case of which organs are the most important. There is no one answer for both of those questions because we all have different views on what is the most important. A house without a roof has no point since that gives the home little meaning since the house would lack privacy and protection from the weather. But a house without a foundation also takes away the meaning of a house.

Although both roof and a foundation are necessary to the purpose of a home to provide safety, privacy and comfort, it is important to see that a foundation is like the brain in the case of which organ is the most important. The brain communicates with the other organs through the nervous system. Our blood would not pump and keep the nervous system working without our heart. Without a functioning heart, the person would not function. Without the brain, the heart would not work. But with the heart and without a brain, the heart would not work either.

This is the similar case in whether the roof or the foundation is the most important to a building. Without the foundation, the building would have no support, insulation, or protection. Because the roof is used with the support of the foundation, the roof would not function well without the support of a building’s foundation. Because of that, a building’s health is heavily reliant on its foundation.

Support

Given the meaning of foundation, it is no secret that it means support or base. In architecture, the foundation of a house is also its base or support. No houses are just built on the ground without a foundation. That is because a foundation is essential for providing a building with the support that it needs to serve its purpose of holding its residents over a long period of time.

Serving as the base of a building, the foundation keeps the actual structure of the building in place. Earth’s land is covered in soil and greens. Because soil is often moist, it is important for a building to not be on moist grounds. A foundation solves that.

Because a foundation is so important in supporting the structure of a building, with a weak foundation, the building is essentially unhealthy. Because the support is weak, the building could be in a more dangerous situation in case of earthquakes or other factors that may cause heavy movement in the ground. With a weak foundation, the foundation is more susceptible to getting tumbled over and causing a lot of damage.

Insulation

Almost every house has an insulation system to keep them cool, warm and have a good flow of clean air. But that does not come out of nowhere. Although not everyone has their insulation system installed in their building’s foundation, it does not get rid of the fact that a building’s foundation serves as a place to hold the often area-consuming insulation systems.

With a good foundation, chances are, the insulation of your home is in good condition and you would feel comfortable. Comfort is a major factor in the purpose of a home so that means that the building is in good health since it is functioning well.

Protection

Because the earth is often at work because of tectonic plate movements, natural disasters and movements in the soil, it is important for a structure that is supposed to be able to stand for a long period of time to be able to overcome those problems.

Because a house without a foundation is on soil, it is very unsafe because the soil can get moist in the different seasons and interfere with the building’s structure. It may also lead bugs whose homes are in the soil into the building. Although it may be true that we built our homes, on top of their homes, it is important for them to not intrude on someone else’s property.

A good foundation solves all of those problems and keeps the building healthy by serving its purpose of providing protection, support, and comfort.
